Nootropics 101: What Are They And Should You Take Them?

Posted by David Nickum Health

Nootropics may seem like a new trend, but if you’ve been taking supplements to improve overall performance, you may be familiar with what they can do. Nootropics, also known as smart drugs, are supplements or components that have the potential to improve brain functions, such as focus, memory, concentration, and information processing.

A Closer Look At Nootropics

The main function of nootropics is to promote the improvement of brain function. As people are more invested in improving their performance in various aspects of life, it’s resulted in the demand for these supplements on the market. If you want to know more about nootropics, you should consider checking out a reliable source, such as WholisticResearch. You can learn more from their site if you want to stay on the right track.

Incorporating nootropics into your daily routine might help improve memory, attention, and mental acuity. Although the concept of nootropics isn’t new, their availability on the market is new since many are still questioning the true benefits and safety considerations of using nootropics. Some people are eager to try them, while others are still hesitant.

Nootropics have existed since the 1960s, when Corneliu E. Giurgea, a Romanian scientist, discovered that ‘piracetam’ could activate the brain rather than subdue it. The term ‘nootropics’ was coined during this discovery, derived from the Greek word for ‘mind.’

You can think of them as brain food that improves focus, memory, alertness, and attention. Nootropics work by boosting neurotransmitters, nutrients, and brainwaves responsible for supporting brain health. Although nootropics may help with attention span or manage fatigue levels, they won’t, in any way, increase your intelligence level. In simple terms, nootropics may assist the brain in reaching its full potential by improving focus and other essential cognitive functions.

Safety Considerations

When most people think of nootropics, the first thing that comes to mind is whether they’re safe to use. Among the regulatory agencies that ensure the safety of products, the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) categorizes nootropics as dietary supplements. The products in this category no longer require approval to be sold on the market.

The reason for this is that the majority of formulations or components in nootropics products have been around for years, even though nootropics have only recently gained popularity on the market. Remember, however, that there’s a rule to follow, which was established by Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea years ago and is still in effect today, for a product to be considered a nootropic, such as improving memory and learning capabilities, shielding the brain from both physical and chemical injuries, enhancing learned behaviors under disruptive conditions, boosting the tonic cortical or subcortical control mechanisms, and displaying minimal negative effects.

What Are The Types Of Nootropics?

There are various types of nootropics available on the market that you should be familiar with if you plan on trying one soon. These include the following:

  • Natural nootropics are plant-based, and some of the popular options include Bacopa monnieri, lion’s mane mushroom, and phosphatidylserine.
  • Racetams are the most common and are derived synthetically. Some examples include piracetam, aniracetam, and phenylpiracetam, to name a few.
  • Ampakines are the most recent forms of synthetic nootropics that affect glutamate activity.
  • Vitamin B derivatives typically include synthetic substances derived from vitamin B molecules, such as Pyritinol.
  • Choline nootropics work by boosting acetylcholine levels in the brain for better memory.
  • Peptides are an interesting variety and a popular choice in the biohacking trend.
  • Eugeroics or wakefulness enhancers are capable of enhancing wakefulness and focus.

When To Use Nootropics

Although nootropics may be safe to use, you should first decide on why you need to use one in the first place. If you tend to have episodes of being unable to concentrate, constantly forgetting or experiencing brain fog now and then, or want to maintain a good state of mental health, you may try nootropics.

How To Start Using Nootropics

Nootropics are available in a wide range of supplements that may boost overall brain performance. The benefits of nootropics may be advantageous for students eager to boost their memory or the elderly experiencing cognitive decline.

If you want to include nootropics in your daily routine, but are currently taking other medications, it’s best to consult your doctor first due to the possible interactions.

Once you’re going to use one, make sure to read the product description carefully and always follow the recommended dosage.

Benefits Of Nootropics

Some of the reported indications of improved brain capability when taking nootropics may include the following:

  • Longer attention span
  • Improved memory and clear thinking
  • Better motivation level
  • Sharpened focus

Due to the purported beneficial effects of using nootropics, individuals with evident cognitive decline, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory-related issues may benefit from the supplement. However, healthy individuals without cognitive decline can include nootropics in their daily routine to boost cognitive and mental performance.

Final Thoughts

Nootropics may be a suitable option to improve overall brain function. It can be for work-related performance reasons or to give your brain a boost. If you want to improve overall performance, especially your memory, focus, and attention span, a nootropic supplement, along with a well-balanced diet and lifestyle, might be a suitable adjustment to your routine for better cognitive performance in no time.
