How Many Pushups Should I be Able to Do?

Posted by David Nickum Exercise

Like it, loathe it, but you just cannot ignore it. Pushups are among the most effective exercises that help build strength, endurance and improve your overall muscle development. However, many people find them to be quite daunting. While doing a pushup might seem easy, it actually takes a lot of effort to properly perform this exercise.

In fact, the number of pushups you can do in a day is an excellent way to measure your physical strength and fitness level. However, different people have different limits for pushups that vary with their age, gender, and professional background. Therefore, if you’re curious to know how many pushups should you be able to do, then keep reading to find out.

Muscular Endurance Test

One of the best ways to find out the number of pushups you should do. Is by performing the muscular endurance test. The muscular endurance test can be performed to figure out the number of pushups you can do. Before it starts adding excessive muscular pressure that keeps you from performing this exercise correctly.

You can perform this test by yourself, or you could ask someone to count the number of pushups you can do properly. We think the latter is more convenient. You can start with this test by coming in the proper position. You need to put your hands on the ground under your shoulders and keep them flat.

You need to keep your body in a straight, stretched-out pose, and then you will you’re your elbows to push your chest towards the ground and then lift your chest back up. However, females can opt for a more convenient version of pushups by performing this exercise on bent knees. Performing this simple test will help you determine how many pushups you can do in one go.

How Many Pushups Can Adults Do?

The number of pushups an adult can perform depends upon their gender and age. The rule of thumb is that men are usually capable of performing more pushups than women. The number of pushups increases up to a certain age before it starts decreasing again.

A reasonable number of pushups for various ages include up to 28 pushups for teenage men and 24 pushups for teenage women. The number of pushups stays the same for men in their twenties, and it changes to up to 20 pushups for women in their twenties. Men in their thirties can perform up to 21 pushups, and women in their thirties can perform up to nineteen pushups.

Men in their forties can do up to 16 pushups. Women in their 40s can go up to 14 pushups. Men in their fifties can perform up to 12 pushups. Women can perform up to 10 pushups in their forties. Men in their sixties can perform ten pushups, and women in their sixties can do nine eight pushups. These numbers can change a lot with a little training. The numbers listed above for pushups are just averages. I’ve seen women do over 60 pushups without a problem.

However, these figures may vary depending upon every individual’s physical fitness, health levels, lifestyle, and medical status. Therefore, this is the average amount, but it can be different for different people.

How Many Pushups Can Children Do?

Pushups are also an excellent exercise for children since it helps children with optimal muscular development and improving their muscular endurance. Children can determine the number of pushups they should perform with the muscular endurance test as well.

However, it’s extremely beneficial for children to incorporate this exercise into their list of frequent physical activities. This is because it promotes healthy fitness habits that last until their adults.

The average number of pushups performed by children between the ages of seven and nine is the same, and the average number of pushups performed is ten. After the age of ten, boys can perform more pushups than girls, and their number increases to twelve while it becomes eleven for girls.

The One-Minute Pushup Test

The one-minute pushup test is the perfect way to determine the number of pushups that various professionals can perform. Certain professions are very particular about physical fitness, and two of the main professions include the police and military. Therefore, candidates for these jobs have to go through some physical fitness tests before they make the final cut, and one of these tests is the one-minute pushup test.

This test includes performing as many pushups as you can in one minute since that is the set time limit. Furthermore, every organization can have a cutoff limit, and the candidate must fall within that limit to qualify for the post.

Test Score Improvement

Everyone wants to do good pushups. People want to make sure that they fall within an above-average range for their age and gender. This is important for things like a military test or law enforcement test. Having a good pushup score will help you score higher on the test.

Pushups focus on the pectoralis muscles in your chest, along with the delts, triceps, and biceps. They also engage your leg muscles and your core. Therefore, you could start by working on your core, and planks are the most effective exercise for increasing core strength.

You could also perform single-arm chest presses to strengthen your core and arm muscles. You need to lay flat on an elevated surface for this workout, such as a bench, and then stretch your legs and feet to a forty-five-degree angle. Then, you will hold the bench with one hand and perform a chest press using a dumbbell with the other hand.

You can also improve your pushup score by performing more convenient pushup modifications such as knee pushup or wall pushups.

Final Word

Pushups are one of the most common exercises that help with muscle development. However, different people have different ranges for performing pushups which means that the number of pushups you can perform depends upon your age, gender, lifestyle, and physical fitness levels. However, you can improve the number of pushups by working on your physical fitness levels.
